The Amazing Northern Lights

– “For You To Enjoy And Share With Friends” –

A time lapse video of the Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis, taken from Norway. Auroras such as the Northern Lights are associated with the solar wind. The solar wind is a flow of ions continuously flowing outward from the Sun. These ions are trapped by the Earth’s magnetic field and many of these ions are then attracted to the poles where they are accelerated toward Earth. These ions then collide with atmospheric atoms causing energy releases which appear in the form of large circles of light around the poles.

The different colours are due to collision with different gases in the atmosphere. Oxygen, depending upon altitude produces a red or green colour and nitrogen a blue or red colour.
