Curiosity’s First Scoop

A Martian soil sample was lifted from the ground on October 7th 2012 by the scoop on the robotic arm of Curiosity. This video clip shows this first Martian material being vibrated inside the scoop.

The scoop was vibrated to discard any overfill the vibration also serves to show physical characteristics of the collected material, such as an absence of pebbles.
