A Tour Of Chile’s Telescopes

Chile is a magnet for the worlds astronomers due to the north part of the country being very high above sea level, having clear skies and very dry conditions. Here is a quick tour of the its main telescopes including VLT (Very Large Telescope) and the new Alma array which will consist of 66 dishes.

The Alma observatory is built in the Chajnantor Plateau at 5,050 meters altitude and is the second highest steel- and concrete-made building on Earth, the first one being a railway station on the China-Tibet railway.
