A Giant Exoplanet, Beta Pictoris, Is Caught as Orbiting the Star

Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) on the Gemini South telescope in Chile has captured images of a distant star β Pictoris (Beta Pictoris) and its orbiting gas giant planet. The star is located in the constellation of Pictor, or The Painter’s Easel, and is about 63 light-years away from Earth.
